Mumbai: In response to the increasing security concerns for resident doctors, the city's civic administration is planning to enhance the technology in the control rooms at its hospitals. While major medical schools like KEM, LTMG, Nair, and Cooper Hospital already have control rooms equipped with approximately 450 CCTVs each, the BMC aims to boost the storage capabilities to make them function akin to the central disaster control room. For smaller hospitals, the plan includes increasing the number of CCTVs and establishing sophisticated control rooms. A senior BMC official mentioned that the work on implementing these control rooms in several hospitals has already commenced. These rooms are designed to resemble the central control room and will have CCTV access to all hospital cameras, direct lines to emergency services like the police and fire brigade, connection to the civic central disaster control room, and a public address system. In emergency situations, control room staff will gather patient information, update the central control room about admissions, and coordinate with medical staff. However, a significant challenge is finding adequate space near the office of the dean or medical superintendent for these control rooms. It's been noted that the minimum space requirement for these rooms is 300 square feet, which can be hard to accommodate in existing hospital settings. For medical colleges with extensive campuses, there are multiple control rooms; for instance, Sion Hospital has three, Cooper Hospital has two, and KEM Hospital features a large control room within the hospital premises. At Nair Hospital, renovations are ongoing, and a new control room is being established adjacent to the main facility. The dean's office is adjacent to the ward office in the BMC administrative system. Each ward office is equipped with a CCTV control room near the ward officer's office. Simultaneously, the deans, medical superintendents, and their security department are identifying key areas that may require additional CCTV cameras or improved lighting.
